Why Weight Loss Surgery?

May 5, 2009

Are you a good candidate for bariatric surgery? If you are, how much weight would you like to lose? If you are looking to lose eighty pounds or more in weight, you are, most likely, a candidate for surgery

Whether or not surgery is worth the money has a simple answer; it all depends. While that may not have necessarily been the answer that you were looking for, it is the truth. For many individuals, surgery is well worth it; however, there are others who don’t end up benefiting from surgery. To determine if surgery is worth the cost to you, personally, you will want to take a number of factors into consideration.

One of the many factors that you will want to mull over, when determining if surgery is worth the cost for you, is your weight. You will find that many surgeons require that you are at least eighty pounds overweight to undergo surgery. With that in mind, you may be able to find a doctor who will make an exception, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that you should opt for surgery. If you are able to try to lose the weight on your own, through the use of exercise, eating healthy, or diet pills, you may find it more affordable to do so. I certainly recommend it if you can do that.

Do you have the ability to set goals and follow through on them? The initial will be relatively easy when you first have surgery (besides some of the complications), but in the long run is where the rubber meets the road. To maintain is hard and it takes self-motivated people. With a reduced stomach pouch, which is how most surgeries work, you must limit the amount of food that you eat. If you do not do so, you may gain your weight back and possibly endanger your health. If you do not think that you can follow all of the instructions given to you, following a surgery, surgery may not be the best option for you.

Is surgery the thing to do?

There are many factors to consider when deciding to undergo surgery. Hopefully these will help lead and guide you to make the right choice for your life. Remember that bariatric surgery can be a life altering event and can even lead to death in a small percentage of cases. It is serious stuff, so you need to understand it all. As a reminder, it is important that you take the time to first consult with your doctor. Keep in mind that a certain number of factors must be met before a person can get surgery and not everyone is going to be accepted to get a bariatric procedure.

Important Factors In Deciding The Need to Have Surgery

  • Your Body Mass Index (BMI)
  • Comorbid Chronic Health Conditions such as Diabetes and High Blood Pressure
  • Psychological Wellbeing
  • Financial Well Being
  • Self Motivated? How Much Does The Person Actually Want to Lose Weight?
